§ 133.01. Powers and duties of police officers.

  • The Mayor shall appoint, with the approval of the Council, such number of police officers as are or may be hereafter prescribed. The police officers shall be under command of the Mayor and the Chief of Police, and shall perform any and all duties incident to the office of police officer under the instructions and command of the Mayor and the Chief of Police, and, in addition to the usual and customary duties prescribed by the laws of this State, it shall specially be the duty of each police officer to report to the Chief of Police, or someone designated by the Chief of Police to receive such report, the condition of all streets, sidewalks, alleys, unimproved lots and all other things and matters within the limits of the City that may come under the notice of such police officers which may relate to the health of the residents thereof, the sanitary conditions or the necessity of the removal of any obstructions upon any of the streets, alleys or sidewalks. The Chief and any member of the police force shall have all of the powers, authority, rights and privileges within the corporate limits of the City with regard to the arrest of persons, the collection of claims and the execution and return of any search warrant, warrant of arrest or other process, which can legally be exercised or discharged by a deputy sheriff of a county.
