§ 1507.04. Highly flammable liquids; storage.

  • (a)

    No merchant shall keep gasoline or other liquids more flammable than common coal oil, in, about or upon his premises, unless such is stored in approved steel tanks of a capacity not exceeding 600 gallons each. Such tanks shall be buried beneath the ground a minimum depth of two feet and covered over with a concrete slab six inches thick and as large as the surface area of the pit in which the tank is buried. This concrete slab may be omitted and the tanks be buried not less than three feet below the surface of the ground. Filler pipes shall have locking caps and shall be carried outside all buildings and the ends placed at least five feet from any door or exit opening. In addition, one foam fire extinguisher of one gallon capacity shall be provided and placed ready for use at all times, for each tank so used for the storage of flammable liquids.

    (b)

    No person may keep flammable liquids in quantities greater than 600 gallons except in tanks approved by the Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc., and without first obtaining the consent of Council, which Council shall first refer the matter to the Chief of the City Fire Department for his consideration. The Chief shall consider the safety of the area resident, property and other fire conditions in making his report to Council as to whether such consent shall be given.
